Seventeen-year-old Ruby Fields has always lived by the rules set up by her foolishly overprotective mother. As a result, she doesn't go to school, she's never been kissed, and almost everything she knows about life is what she has learned from old movies.
But now...now there's this Joshua guy. He's quirky, and he's tall, and he uses “romantic” and “old-fashioned” in the same sentence.
And there's Mrs. Wheeler, an eccentric retired Hollywood costume designer and Ruby's new best friend.
When Mrs. Wheeler ends up in hospital, just after telling Ruby her long-kept secret, Ruby decides to break her mother's rules and embark on a journey that will change her life forever.

She never thought that an old lady and a
weird guy can change her world. Ruby had been living in a bubble no thanks to
her overprotective mother. Instead of enjoying school dances, boys, and proms –
she’s homeschooled, never been kissed and doesn’t really have a lot of friends.
Then here comes two people who suddenly
turned her world upside down – Joshua. The quirky guy who has Tourette
Syndrome. He may have some weird tics, but doesn’t make him less adorable. He’s
a great guy whose romantic at times, but has his own issues too. He suffered a
loss and completely lost faith in the magic of shooting stars.
If you think a seventeen-year-old can’t be
best friends with old ladies, then you will be mistaken. In Just Like A
Musical, we are introduced to the lovely, Mrs. Wheeler – a retired Hollywood
costume designer who wants to make peace with her past before everything gets
too late.
And her being in the hospital right after
telling Ruby her big secret, Ruby decided to go out of her way, break all her
mother’s rule and go on a journey – met a few interesting people, discovered
new things, and best of all, fell in love.
The characters are complex and interesting –
most especially our heroine Ruby. She’s one of a kind – she might grew up in a
protective bubble, but she’s a risk taker. She’s brave, compassionate, and she
gives her whole heart to the people she cares the most.
Just Like A Musical is almost poetic at some
points. Milena Veen writes her scenes
beautifully that you can wrapped you with the characters in the scene. She made
a simple plot, and out of it spun an amazing tale of forgiveness, freedom, and
love.
