Love Me If You Dare by Kate Laurens - Book Review

Love Me If You Dare
Safe Haven #2
Kate Laurens

Some things change...

It’s been three years since Kaylee Sawyer has been home—home to the alcoholic mother she can’t handle, home to the painful memories of her sister Ella... and home to the guilt she’s carried for years. About to enter her final year of college, she is determined to come to terms with the mess of her past—and to ignore the guy whose single kiss has been tattooed into her mind forever.

Some things stay the same...

Dylan McKay is still golden haired and dangerous, the flame Kaylee was always afraid to touch for fear of getting burnt. But despite the damage that’s been done, she finds that she still can’t stay away from the one person who accepted her the way she was.

Some things are meant to be.

Kaylee is no longer the innocent girl she once was. Though tragedy ripped them apart before, one look from Dylan brings all of the old feelings rushing back. Torn between her past and her future, she’s not sure if a person can ever truly go home again.

But Dylan doesn’t plan to let her go without a fight.

Recommended for mature readers aged 17+ due to language and sexual content

This type of books – you just have to judge it by the cover. Because if you think, the cover is HOT and Sizzling – wait till you read it. (You can totally read this even if you haven’t read the first book in the series, because this can act as a stand-alone!)

I love it because it was a short read, and I finished it in one sitting right after my 16-hour duty. I needed to finish it, and I did. Wow! I must say, I totally have to read the series immediately.

Dylan and Kaylee suffered the same loss when Kaylee’s twin, Ella died. The first few chapters had me asking – what the heck is going on here? How did Ella die? How it is Kaylees fault? Why is he blaming her? IT HAD ME GUESSING, and TURNING THE PAGES eagerly to get my answers!!!

She left town, running away from everything, including the only man who had made her heart beat so fast. But now she’s back for the summer – a new her. She was not the same girl who have fled town, she dressed, talked and acted almost like Ella. It was like she was trying to live for her twin. It was sad. I thought it was guilt that propelled her to lose her personality. But there was more to it than meets the eye. I find it also sad that she can’t commit herself to Joel – whom I think is a great guy. He’s her on-off boyfriend who is always there for her. How can she give someone else her heart when she already gave it years ago??

Change is the only permanent thing in the world, or in this book. When Kaylee came back, she didn’t expect to see a completely different Dylan. He quit school, got himself a job, a truck and a dog. Although he had been best friends with Ella, and was almost the same as her, Dylan was the perfect man for Kaylee. Now, if she could only realize this, and FINALLY ASK HIM about his and Ella’s relationship. Sometimes, assuming things leads to total unhappiness. I love that he’s determined to have Kaylee this time, pushing her to her limits and trying for her to talk to him more. I totally adore the climbing scene.

They needed both to surpass the guilt and pain from the loss. No matter how hard Kaylee tried to get rid of Dylan, he never falters. (Yay for him!) He stayed right there, waiting for her, like he did for a couple of years when she ran away. I like the secondary characters too, how her friends Serena and Maddy came into town, thinking that she needed rescue. They never judged, and stayed with her for a while. Jax is amazing too - and well, he has a few surprises of his own. (Total OMG!)

It was a short, quick read that had me smiling and almost near-tears. The pages of the book where just enough to close every door that were opened. I enjoyed how Dylan and Kaylee’s character developed, and how they finally overcome their guilt and the pain of their loss. Now, what I’m really looking forward to is Jax’s story. Ahem. The teaser at the end of the book is just not enough!!!
