More than a century after the tragedy of Hélène's death and before Ella found Kale bruised and broken on her doorstep, Kale moved through the world in a haze of personal punishment allowing it to consume him. Until his friend, Detective Deacon, a newly infected Chorý calls on him for a favor.

In this prequel to the Few Are Angels series, Kale is thrown into a world of human blood trafficking and is introduced to a Chorý that offers him a chance at happiness— in blood.

Kale stared at the frizzy-haired girl through his own hair, which had fallen in his face. She was attractive, with an oval face, a small but wide button nose, plump rose petal–red lips, and bright inquisitive eyes encased by long and thick lashes. Natural brown and copper curls sat at the top of her head, bound by a black headband. A few errant curls had escaped, cascading down her long delicate neck.

He kept his eyes hidden by his hair as she entered the room, letting her scan each of them. He peeked at Deacon from his seated position as his friend no doubt ogled the young woman.

Seconds later, she stood in front of Deacon with a bright smile and an outstretched hand. Kale hoped that Deacon would stay focused and not let the girl distract him from their job, but he wondered if she could become a distraction to him, himself. Kale had been serious when he told Deacon that he wasn’t interested in dating, but it didn’t mean that the sight of a beautiful girl didn’t affect him. For Kale, it was the eyes, always the eyes. In hers he could see innocence and curiosity, which intrigued him.

When she greeted Deacon, her voice wasn’t what he’d expected to hear. It was warm, deep, and sultry, and it commanded everyone’s attention in the room.

Deacon introduced himself with a wide smile, and Sola moved to the next new hire.

“I guess you could call me your tour guide and trainer for the day.” She chuckled and then smiled brightly as she took the other man’s hand and shook it.

“And you are?” she asked.

“Jay Mason,” he answered her gruffly without standing up to greet her. Sola nodded and smiled. For some unknown reason, she didn’t seem to mind Jay’s lack of manners, his rudeness annoyed Kale. As she made her way closer to Kale, he stood.

Her bright eyes widened, and her gaze followed him. After the time he’d been spending around Deacon—who made him seem like a dwarf—he realized how tall and imposing he must seem to her. To ease her mind, he placed a warm smile on his face as he waited for her to take the last few paces leading to him. Once she was in front of him, she reached her delicate hand out in front of her, and Kale squeezed it gently and lightly shook it.
