On My Knees by Meredith Wild - Book Tour, Book Review, Giveaway

Haunted by the responsibility of caring for her troubled family, Maya Jacobs gave the only answer she could when Cameron asked her to marry him. Years later, entrenched in a soulless professional routine, she distracts herself from the lingering regret of her decision with a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle that guarantees no man will ever find his way into her heart again.

Cameron Bridge has spent the past five years married to the military, trying to escape the painful memory of losing Maya. After fighting his own war in the desert, he starts a new life in New York City, with his siblings, Olivia and Darren, by his side.

When fate brings Maya back to him in the heart of a city filled with its own hopes and shadows, can Cameron find the girl he once loved in the woman she’s become?

What they had was almost perfect. They were in love, they were so much into each other, and they were so compatible in bed. Sad thing is, Maya Jacob had so much in her sleeves that when Cameron asked her to marry him, she refused. Little did she know that saying no would break their relationship and drive him away, leaving her broken than ever.

Years later, she had a stable job with high walls that surrounded her heart. She worked hard, she partied hard, and yet she couldn’t find any fulfillment. Inside, she was still lost, and still trying to find the one person that mattered to her all this time. What she didn’t expect is to come across Cameron Bridge after all these years, and he still have the power to ignite her senses. But, she was burned once, she’d be a fool to let him inside her walls again.

Cameron, on the other hand, had spent his life in the military after Maya refused him. When he finally saw Maya after all these years, he would be stupid to let her get away again. However, it would take so much hard work before he can break her walls. He had learned from his mistakes in the past, he would make it right this time. I liked him during  the first few pages, had a slight misunderstanding after his proposal, and finally went back into my graces years later. I admire his determination, and his patience to win her back. They may both have baggage to carry, but Maya’s was heavier. In order to gain her trust, for her to open up, he must be willing to wait.

Maya is a little bit frustrating and very, very stubborn – I can’t blame her after all the pain that Cameron caused when he left her. It wasn’t fair for him to just vanish into thin air without heeding her explanation why she said no. But she gotta hand it down to him in trying to win her back. She’s got great friends in Eli and Vanessa – although I didn’t really like them tolerating her love for booze. They should be concerned about how much she’s ingesting alcohol. It bothered me a lot when she tried to drown her problems with booze, but Cameron helped her get through it – thank goodness. He was concerned, and put a stop to whatever she was doing. He can be demanding at times, and pretty much controlling – it wasn’t because he likes to dominate her, but more of a concern. Then there’s Jia – all along I was wondering if she’s a friend or foe – and boy, I was in for a big surprise…

It took some time, a lot of groveling, changing minds, couple of twists and turns, surprises, and unexpected occurrence for them to finally find their way back into each other’s arms and realize that they were meant to be.

Second chances had been my favorite plot in stories, and I have read a lot of it. On My Knees stood out because of its beautiful words, excellent pacing, complex characters, and compelling storyline – this is one of those novels you will dive into, and never wanted to be up until you are done. One of my must-reads.

I want you, Maya. Your heart may be broken, but I still want it. And I may not deserve it, but I’ll wait for it, as long as I need to. In the meantime, I’m here. For tonight, let this be enough, just you and me.
