Love burns hotter the second time around…
Two years ago, the medical world was shaken by scandal, and Payton Daniels's family was at the center of it. The second she graduated, Payton left everything behind―her high school sweetheart, her family, and the controversy surrounding her mother's death—and hid within the anonymity of college. But Payton’s ex, Blake Hiller, hasn't forgiven her for leaving, and when he enrolls in the same medical ethics class, she panics. She can’t run the risk of him telling everyone who she really is.
As if being at the same university isn’t enough, both Blake and Payton land the same internship. Forced together, their passion for each other reignites, but when Payton is asked to testify in her father’s high-profile trial, she must choose between risking her acceptance into medical school to help her father, and losing every connection to her past—including the only guy she’s ever loved.

She wanted to become a doctor. But Payton’s dad made sure
that her future was a little bleak after a huge scandal broke that shook the
medical world two years ago. Her father, a doctor, was the center of it. The
moment she graduated, she left home and everything behind: her family, her
friends, the love of her life and the controversy that surrounded her mother’s
death. She preferred the anonymity she has in college, using her mother’s name.
Besides the panic attacks and occasional nightmares, she was having an okay
time in college until Blake Hiller, the ex-flame, decided to show up. Payton
was afraid Blake is going to tell everyone and ruin her cover.
When they land the same internship together, their world
was becoming smaller for them. It didn’t take so much time for their spark to
reignite. But when she was asked to testify in her father’s high-profile trial,
she was torn between her past and her future.
They had all those sparks coming in different directions
the first time they saw each other again, and I just knew it would only take a
matter of time before they finally get together. However, they needed to settle
the past first – what happened between them? What went wrong? They were perfect
together, and suddenly he wasn’t there, and suddenly she vanished.
ETHICS. CHOICES. MORALS. What is right? What is wrong?
People are always torn in making choices. It was hard for Payton to lose her
mother, but for her father to be involved was even harder. But why would her
father do it? It’s against the oath he made as a doctor! I guess I was torn for
a while too. Being in the medical field, I would always be putting my patients
first and advocating their rights. I always knew people have their rights, and
choices. It is not easy especially when it won’t coincide with our own –
leaving us in an ethical dilemma.
Her mother and her father made the choice. I would wish
they got her involve, but she was younger then and emotional. Perhaps, they
would think she couldn’t handle the truth. It took a while before she finally
learned the story behind, and it was pretty much heartbreaking.
Jennifer Blackwood had handled this
taboo-topic wonderfully. She didn’t take sides – she presented it flawlessly,
allowing her readers to choose on their own. She didn’t condone it, but at the
same time, she didn’t encourage it. She made them understand why some people
would choose it, even though it’s not the popular choice. I love the
second-chance romance theme, the storyline and most especially, the braveness
of the author to tackle this type of plot.
