This Sky by Autumn Doughton - Book Review, Giveaway

I have waited for this book for a while now, and finally I was one reading it, and just like any other book Autumn Doughton has written, it would be a sin to put this one down. So ready your boards, because we are about to surf with Landon and Gemma.

When he touches me, the sky and the earth switch places

Gemma Sayers has spent the last six days rotting in a hotel room, wallowing in a noxious combination of gin, junk food and self-pity. She’s no stranger to disappointment but nothing could have prepared her for the chaos that unfolded when her celebrity boyfriend publicly humiliated her. Now the fairytale is officially over and Gemma is determined to put the past behind her and strike out to find a new dream. Just a few teeny-tiny details to work out: she’s currently broke, homeless and unemployed.

Landon Young has his own worries. Surfer by day and bartender by night, he doesn’t have the interest or the time to be anyone’s happily-ever-after. Weighed down by the memory of what happened two years ago, Landon can barely keep his head above water.

This Sky is the thoughtful and often funny story about broken trust, an unexpected love and the hopes we keep sewn in the linings of our pockets.

"You see something you want? Then f***ing take it."

MISS MISERY

The first time I met Gemma, she was misery personified. Her breakup was publicized and sensationalized, no thanks to her sorta-famous-boyfriend whom she caught cheating on her with their waitress while she’s waiting for dessert. MAJOR OUCH, right?

So I don’t blame her if she wallows in misery for a few days, drown in grief for the loss of her relationship, her job, and her future. She’s lost. She’s broken. It was heartbreaking watching her suffer, and I thought after a few pages, I would love to see this girl smile or try to live again. She didn’t really know what to do with her life. Good thing, her best friend Julie pulled a rug underneath and asked (or more like forced her) to go to her.

SURFER BOY

Landon used to be one of the most promising young athlete in the surfing world. But one accident, one wrong choice had led him in the wrong path – thus, he didn’t only loss endorsement, he got kicked out of the tour. From millions, he was reduced to nothing. He had to go to rehab, he had to start from scratch. His whole life was broken, and he was trying to pick up the pieces. Now, here he is, out of the limelight, bartending while attending school.

What he didn’t expect was to cross path with a girl who rocked his world unexpectedly.

MISERY LOVES COMPANY

Both have a dark, and painful past. Which did not only spring out of their love life, but way beyond that.

It should have been a rebound. No strings, no commitment, no expectations.. They have down their walls, allowed each other into their secret worlds and talked about their past (which wasn’t a walk in the beach, by the way). But as they spend more and more time together and their talks getting deeper and deeper – they unexpectedly fell.

Two broken people: how can it possibly work? My sentiments exactly. They’d sink, and before they knew it, they’d be out of air and drowning. But no, instead, they surfed those waves, there were those times when they could have fallen off the board – but they didn’t. They moved swiftly until they have reached the shore.

What happens when the past caught up with them? Can they handle it? Would their feelings be strong enough to withstand the strong wave that is about to come their way?

THE OTHER COMPANY

You will love the secondary characters in this story, except for two (yep, I counted them). They are weird, funny, the greatest cheerleader, motivational speakers – well, they can be blunt, but they were effective in trying to pull head out of the main character’s a**ses. Jules was the greatest best friend and Claudia was the greatest sister anyone could ever have.

Some characters will make you laugh, some will infuriate you and others will surprise you and knock you off your readers. Argh. The nerve. Nevertheless, this book is made up of interesting sets of characters.

WORTH THE WAIT

This had been worth waiting for. Ever since I have read THIS MOMENT (which still tops on my favorite book list), I have been waiting, and waiting for another book from this brilliant author. And finally, I was rewarded with this novel, definitely a must read, with its beautiful words which borders poetic (well, this book has great poems inserted in between), and realistic and imperfect characters which a whole lot of people can definitely relate. It is one heck of a beautiful journey of two broken people who found love unexpectedly at the crossroads of their lives. It’s a poignant tale of love, hope, trust and second chances. I would definitely recommend it to friends.

"Maybe the point isn’t whether or not you become a moth or a butterfly. Maybe the point is that, either way, you’ve got wings."

Autumn Doughton

My first love is reading. My second love is pizza.

Currently, I live in Gainesville, Florida and I write books. Fun books for you, and your sister, and your best friend, and your hair dresser, etc. I think of writing as a sort of therapy, and the results tend to be feel-good odes to my lost youth, which is exactly how I like it.

When I'm not working or chasing after my two daughters, two dogs, two cats, three ducks and one lovely husband, I can be found skulking around the movie theater or local bookseller. Generally with chocolate somewhere on my person because I never leave home without a treat.
