The MANNY

The first time I met Andrew – HE WASN’T THE BOYFRIEND MATERIAL. No. No. No.

1.       He is childish – so immature

2.       He plays pranks

3.       He doesn’t have a steady job

4.       He lives with his sister

I wonder how will I ever fall in love with him?

He was forced to find some work and leave his sister’s apartment. Beggars can’t be choosers: I guess both go both ways for him and Gwen: He needed work, and she needed someone to watch over the children while she is at work.

I underestimated him. He might be immature, but I think he was perfect for a job. He’s the perfect example why adults should have that inner child within us. It made him fun to be with, and he became someone the children couldn’t live without. It was the children, and perhaps Gwen that changed him. That made him into someone his family could be proud of. There is something amazing, and inspiring for these people who helped mold young minds and push them out of their shells. By the end of the story, you will find out why this guy is pretty amazing.

THE MOM

Gwen just got a promotion, which makes her time in the office a little bit hectic. She wanted to spend as much time as she wanted but she can’t. So, she tries her best to give some quality time to the children when she’s around. If you like Andrew, you will like Gwen as well – she had done so much for the children, and I can’t blame her for wanting to be happy herself. Nevertheless, she would sacrifice anything, even her happiness for the sake of the children.

Can she gamble her heart and the children’s happiness? How long can Andrew stay? Will this man stay forever?

THE CHILDREN

They are adorable! I love them both. I didn’t know their history at first, but my heart went out to them immediately. Bree and her grown-up ways, and of course there’s Brady who have been through so much. Day by day, each experience with them, each mistakes, each learning made Andrew a better man. Day by day, they have found a way into his heart. It was such a heartbreaking thought watching him standing there in the driveway as he looks at the bus driving away with both children inside of it – this was one of my favorite scenes in the book.

It’s amazing how some strangers can change and put meaning into your life. I didn’t expect the impact the children would have into his. What started out to be a job, had turned his life upside down. The not-so-boyfriend material became a dream guy. This book was recommended to be by a friend, telling me it was a fun read. Which, it was by the way. I was laughing my heart out. This guy was hilarious. I loved every single heartwarming, and heartbreaking moments of the book. It found a spot on my list of favorites and will-recommend books!

Only a few books can make you feel.

I never thought I would come across another book that I would love and would make me feel so, so much intense emotion as The Fault in Our Stars & The Last Hour. Oh boy, I was so wrong!!! Because this book - this emotion-filled-heartbreaking-inspiring-super-amazing book - just had me at first chapter. To say it was beautifully written is an understatement. Because this book is so much more than that. This is one of the few books I'd say that five stars wasn't enough. So for the first time, after almost three years of reviewing books, I'm giving out my first six stars! 

It took me a while to make this review because I didn't know where to start or what powerful adjectives can I possibly use to convey how much this novel moved me. 

When Sara lost Cole, her husband, her whole world stopped and suddenly there was no more reason to live. Everyday waking up is a difficult task. She became recluse, stopped painting and hang-on to that one-sided phone call which always ends up with the line saying, "Take Care, Sara."

Her journey in trying to begin a new life without her husband is hard especially when she didn't know where to start. But through the help of Mason, the currently-on-vacation-grief-counselor, Spencer and Lincoln, Sara tries to live life again.

Mason. He may be rough on Sara but his attitude proved to be a great help. He may be sticking his nose into places he's not wanted, but he means well. He and Sara suffered the same type of grief and knew almost exactly how she felt. So besides the constant bossing around and enigmatic hints, Mason never did really push Sara into talking to him. He allowed her to take her time with her grief and guided her with the process.

Lincoln. 

Oh my gahd! He's my new book boyfriend. He's patient, persistent, determined, persuasive, sweet, generous, loyal and he loves deeply. *swoon*

A part of him was lost when he lost his brother, Cole. But he too has secrets, secrets he could no longer contain the more time he spends with Sara. Question is: will she be able to see through him? Yay, I could no longer type without spilling out any spoilers for future readers. Nevertheless - 

Take Care, Sara is a beautiful novel about loss, coping, moving on and finally letting go. It's a story about finding love, losing love and once again embracing the emotion when you least expect it. 

Ms. Lindy allowed her readers to be with Sara in her journey. You could actually feel the emotions pouring out in every page. You are one with the characters as they develop and evolve as the story goes. The ride may be painful, and yes you may end up crying your eyes out (like I did), but the reward at the end is totally worth every tears and heartache. 

Take Care, Sara is definitely an inspiration, a page-turner, a tearjerker and a book with a spot on my favorite list. This is a book I would recommend to all my friends, to people who have lost someone they love and needed a strength to move on. 

Take Care, Sara is achingly beautiful, intense and emotional that readers will not only love but will take inspiration from.

“I’m messy and a slob and I like beer a little too much. I work long hours and I like to be outside more than inside. I’m restless and reckless, and yes, I admit, a pervert. Upon occasion. But I love you. I’ve never loved anyone like I love you, Sara. Never will. I want to be with you until I take my last breath, and even when I take my last breath, I want it to be next to you. Please. Redeem my selfish soul and make it better, make me better. Say you’ll be my wife.”  

“When you want something so bad, when you deny yourself it, day after day, for so long, after a while, you ask yourself why you’re even doing it. You hope it will fade and die; you hope your secrets won’t be revealed, because it wouldn’t just kill you if they were, but it would kill other people as well. So you forsake yourself for the greater good, but sometimes, most times, it’s too much of a burden, Sara. Do you know what I’m saying?” 

 The door burst open and Sara reflexively slammed the drawer shut, whirling around to face the intruder, her pulse racing. How had he gotten there so fast?

They looked nothing alike. Lincoln Walker was bigger, taller, with gray eyes and darker hair. But when Sara looked at him, she saw his brother. It was in the perpetually lowered eyebrows, the square jaw, and the stance. Lincoln was the moodier, easier to anger, brother; her husband the more amiable, if slightly wild, brother. Nothing alike in personalities or looks and yet she saw her husband in Lincoln. Maybe because she wanted to.

“What are you doing, Sara?” he demanded.

“I’m—what are you doing?” she shot back.

“You look guilty.” Lincoln strode for her, not stopping until he was inches from her and looming over her.

Sara had to crane her neck back to meet his eyes, and when she did, she saw they were red-rimmed and bloodshot. She took in the dark stubble of his jaw and the unkempt, shaggy hair he used to always keep short. She’d never noticed before how it waved up around his ears on the nape of his neck. Brackets had taken a place around his mouth and he seemed thinner than she remembered. It was wearing on him too.

“You can’t just barge into my house, Lincoln.” Sara backed up a step and Lincoln followed.

He had on a gray hooded sweatshirt and faded jeans and brought the citrus and mint scent of soap and toothpaste with him. It was all wrong. Wrong man, wrong scent, wrong everything.

“Yeah, I can, ‘cause technically, it’s my brother’s house too. You look like shit. When’s the last time you showered or ate a decent meal?”

Lincoln had always been blunt, something Sara had admired. Now, though, she really wished he wasn’t quite so blunt. This was why she had been avoiding him as much as she could. Because she knew he’d do this. He thought he had to look out for her, he thought it was his responsibility to take care of her for his brother. On the phone he could talk to her and not expect anything, because he knew he wouldn’t get anything; not even a response, but in person, Lincoln agitated and pushed her and made demands; he always had. They’d used to argue as a form of communication, something that had forever irritated her husband.

“You’re one to talk. You don’t look much better.”

He opened his mouth, and then closed it. “What happened on the phone? You were there and then you weren’t.” Lincoln’s eyes went to the floor and he leaned down to pick up the beeping phone. He turned it off and resituated it on the wall before narrowing his flint-colored eyes on her. “I miss him too, Sara, but at least I work. At least I try to be normal. I don’t hide in my house and push everyone away. You lost your husband, but I lost my brother.”

I NEED MORE STARS!!!! A WHOLE GALAXY OF IT!

Because you! Yes you, Colleen Hoover deserves a whole sky of it for writing this sweet, gut-wrenching, tear-jearker, touching, super amazing, 'unputdownable' book.

Now, how do I start telling everyone that among my holiday reads - this one just beat every single wonderful novel I have downloaded on my Kindle?

I stayed up all night finishing it because I don't want to miss anything! Some things just can't wait - and some books would want you to stay up at night in frantic anticipation. Will they or will they not have a happy ending???

Meet Sky - she's one of those rare human species who doesn't exist online. No Facebook, Twitter or Myspace account. She hates surprises and receiving presents. She's adopted by a woman who lives a very healthy life and seems to have a phobia with technology. Homeschooled since she was young, Sky was finally allowed to enroll in a public school for her senior year. Problem is that, her super best friend in the whole world, Six is half way across the globe and she's now alone facing all the people who seemed to have an idea who she is without even knowing her first. Thank God she met a new best friend, Breckin - a gay Mormon who is just as wonderful as Six. One thing I love about her: She's one lucky, and brave girl.

Then there's Holder. Rumor has it that he's just spent a year in juvi for beating a gay. BUT!!!!

Holder... oh Holder.... He's.... *speechless*

Let me borrow Sky's thought - because I could already feel myself swooning.

1. His amazingly perfect white teeth hidden behind that seductively crooked grin. 2) The dimples that form in the crevices between the corner of his lips and cheeks when he smiles 3) I'm pretty sure I'm having a hot flash or I have butterflies or maybe I'm coming down with a stomach virus.

I can already tell he isn't the kind of guy a girl gets a simple crush on. He's the kind of guy you fall hard for, and the thought of that terrifies me.

He's a boyfriend that a girl could want. Oh hell, I want him for myself!!! How could I not, when he's a whole lot of package roll into one? He's the bad boy who turned to a most whipped boyfriend by love. He's sweet, and I'm glad that he found her after a life-long search.

“F#%k all the firsts, Sky. The only thing that matters to me with you are the forevers.”

But there are just some things between them - dreams that Sky could not understand and secrets Holder could not divulge. This could end things between them, and their lives would change forever. But no secrets can be kept for long.

I could no longer continue without spoiling the book. So let me end this review right now by saying:

It's one of the book that I will constantly remember for a very, very long time and I will gladly recommend to ALL my friends without any doubt. And Colleen, just like what your character said in the book - let me just rephrase it.

Book Review: Just Remember to Breathe

This is a brilliant book that had me awake till the wee hours of the morning during my day off because I couldn't wait to see how it ends.

Thank you Milka for the recommendation - the read and the lack of sleep was totally worth it.

I will begin this review with the question that haunted me in the first chapters of the novel: WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? Because here I see two people, still crazy in love with each other - but at some point have to let go of each other. Not to mention their separation was not pretty either. So again, what happened to them? What went wrong? Was it the long distance relationship?

Alex Thompson: she's rich, pretty, intelligent and a pre-law student at Columbia University. She has a secret she's not willing to share, and currently nursing her broken heart, trying to move past a break up that shattered her. The last thing she wanted to see was the boy who tore her heart apart.

Dylan Paris: an ex-soldier who just came home of Afghanistan nursing physical and emotional wounds from the war. He was not the same boy before he got deployed. And seeing the girl who made him feel alive and in love just makes thing difficult. The last thing he wanted to do was to involve this girl with his issues. But no matter how hard he tried - he just couldn't stop himself. Because Alex...

Alex needs him to tell her everything, or at least anything for her to trust him with her heart once again. Can Dylan tell her without scaring her and have her running away from him? On the other hand, can Alex spill her secret as well? Secrets she had kept from her family and most of the world?

To simply state that I love reading Just Remember to Breathe is an understatement , because at some point of this book - you'll come to a point that you will forget to breathe in anticipation. Will they or will they not make it?

Book Review: Crash

Lucy had a stable at best, quirky at worst, upbringing. She lives for wearing the satin down on her ballet shoes, has her sights set on Juilliard, and has been careful to keep trouble out of her life. Up until now. 

Jude's everything she knows she needs to stay away from if she wants to separate her past from her future. Staying away, she's about to find, is the only thing she's incapable of. 

For Lucy Larson and Jude Ryder, love's about to become the thing that tears them apart.

“You can’t be friends with the person you were meant to spent your life with” 

I can summarize Crash in these three short wordsL Crazy. Passionate. Intense.

At first I was like: How did this amazing girl who tries to save the world end up with this guy? Love works in mysterious ways, that's for sure. Because Luce - a normal teen age with a bright future fell in love with Jude - a not-so-normal teenager with a bleak future. 

Lucy wanted to save the world - after she failed to save someone important to her. She loves to dance and wished to go to Julliard. Her family was never the same again after the incident, her dad shut the world, and only came to life in his chef uniform and she can no longer talk to her mom without starting an argument. Everything was just the way it is until she met Jude - then her life went topsy-turvy. Nothing was the same again. Her reputation was always questioned in school and she was even labeled as a slut. It didn't help that a juvie was her boyfriend. BUT: I love that she gives everyone a benefit of a doubt and that she gave her trust to Jude - until insecurities ate it all up. Lucy is a strong person and fiercely loyal - she stood up for someone she greatly cared for despite of what everyone around her tells her. I love the fact she believed in him when he didn't.

But can the ultimate bad boy stick to one girl? Can he ever change? The million dollar question is: Can he stay out of trouble? 

Yes, Jude's rap sheet is indeed long and is continuously growing. It didn't help that he grew up in a boy's home and was abandoned by his father who was put to jail. The first time he saw Lucy, he already warned her off: but to no avail. Soon, he found himself attracted to her as well. And when a bad boy who had his shares of woman finally found THE ONE there's no stopping him. Or he thought so, until the both of them uncovered something that can change both their lives. 

The road to happiness for these two seemed to be a long way, because just as the time Lucy and Jude become happy: something will turn out to be wrong. Jude wanted what is best for Lucy and he didn't think its him. The latter however, tries to make him realize that he is enough for her. 

My favorite scene: the father-daughter scene in the near end. Because this is where I finally see some emotion from her father: that her father actually care for her and somehow he explained all his actions in the past. It sounded like both like an apology and an assurance that everything will turn out right in the end. I guess a father knows when he's needed and knew the right (or ratherperfect) words to say.

The ending: *sigh* I think the ending was subtle compare to the rest of the book which makes it more perfect - because my heart could no longer take another jolt from these two love birds. The whole scene will make you think: it was really meant to be .

Book Review: Catching Jordan

I don’t like football, I don’t even considering learning anything about it, but it didn’t stop me from loving Catching Jordan and all the silly football jokes this book has.

I like Jordan – she’s one heck of a girl. At the beginning of the book, I wasn’t sure if she was a girl or a boy because the narrator is really, really tough. Imagine a female quarterback of a high school football team which is dominated by hard-ass alpha males. She is the type of girl you can really say that she is one of the boys. It is just too bad that she needed to kiss a frog before she found out that the prince she was waiting for is right beside her all this time. I love her passion for football and how she cares about her friends, most especially Henry. To gain and keep the respect of her team mates – she doesn’t cry, or hooked up with her teammates. But everything turns topsy-turvy when Ty glides into her field. He’s every girl’s dream and she was surprised when Ty liked her too. Now the big dilemma comes: will she lose the respect of the football team, be the topic of the locker rooms if she gives in to her girly fantasies?

Henry – he’s swoon-worthy! He’s really a great friend to Jordan and I love their relationship because he is every dependable and is always ready to catch her. What more could a girl ask for? Well, only that he can be a bit stubborn and afraid to take risks. It is frustrating!

I like Jordan’s family. Her mom is pretty cool – allowing Henry to still sleep over with certain conditions and being always present during her games supporting her all the way. Mike, her brother is also pretty amazing. He plays for a college team but still comes to her game when he has the time. The only problem is her father – the great NFL player Donovan Woods who seemed to support everyone but her. But I understand where this is coming from – fatherly concern. I love how he redeemed himself in the near-end of the story. The scene was very touching and Miranda Kenneally did a fantastic job – it was heartwarming and my favorite scene in the whole book.

Okay, sex. It wasn’t discussed or elaborated. It was just basically slumped into the story just to add – probably spice? I would love to romanticize about it. Especially between two people who seemed to be in love with each other. But it doesn’t matter that much because you’ll overcome the frustration as you continue on reading. This book is an epic and Simone Elkeles is right to say this is a must-read book!

Catching Jordan is not just about the ultimate girl power. It is about being okay to show vulnerability and emotions without losing yourself. You can be friends with people you never expected, that you can find love that you always wanted is sometimes staring you right in the face, and sometimes the thing that you wanted most may not be the best for you.
