Book Review: Charade (The Game Series)

by Nyrae Dawn

Book Description:
Nineteen-year-old Cheyenne tries to portray the perfect life to mask the memories of her past. Walking in on her boyfriend with another woman her freshman year in college threatens that picture of perfection.

Twenty-one-year-old Colt never wanted college and never expected to amount to anything, but when his mom's dying wish is for him to get his degree, he has no choice but to pretend it's what he wants too.

Cheyenne needs a fake boyfriend to get back at her ex and Colt needs cash to take care of his mom, so they strike a deal that helps them both. But what if Cheyenne’s past isn’t what she thought? Soon they’re trading one charade for another—losing themselves in each other to forget about their pain. The more they play their game, the more it becomes the only thing they have that feels real.

Both Cheyenne and Colt know life is never easy, but neither of them expect the tragedy that threatens to end their charade and rip them apart forever

Book Review: 5/5

This a game. Our game. One that I asked for, but with each day it feels more real.

Wow.

Lot of cussing from here and there.

But still wow.

Cheyenne never thought Gregory would cheat on her. Gregory who had been safe, who’s family havebeen friends with hers, and the only person she knew inside the campus. Now, she needs to find someone to parade as her boyfriend to get back at him. Enters Colt.

Colt. Colt. Colt. Did I tell you how I hate your mouth? Good thing you are sweet deep down there and such a good son to your mom or else there’s no way I am falling for you. But then let me borrow Chey’s words: The rough boy who hates the world, curses like a sailor, but is gentle with his mom and is here with me. Colt needed the money for his dying mom, so he accepted the Charade that Chey offered.

What started as a charade could end up being so much more. But with all the secrets and the past haunting the both of them- can a relationship survive?

I love the novel! Although I didn’t cry like what my friend warned me I would. But my heart ached greatly for this two young people who have been through a lot of things and found comfort in each other’s arms. My heart breaks every time Colt goes to his mom, especially in the near-end of the novel. I was glad someone was with him- because even though he may look tough, he’s still his mother’s little boy.

I would gladly recommend it to friends who would like to read a short, fast-paced novel that can melt or break hearts.

Book Review: Tempting The Bride

by Sherry Thomas

Book Description:
In this new masterpiece of historical romance from the acclaimed Sherry Thomas, a headstrong beauty is rescued by the notorious rake she has always despised...

Helena Fitzhugh understands perfectly well that she would be ruined should her secret love affair be discovered. So when a rendezvous goes wrong and she is about to be caught in the act, it is with the greatest reluctance that she accepts help from David Hillsborough, Viscount Hastings, and elopes with him to save her reputation.

Helena has despised David since they were children—the notorious rake has tormented her all her life. David, on the other hand, has always loved Helena, but his pride will never let him admit the secrets of his heart.

A carriage accident the day after their elopement, however, robs Helena of her memory—the slate is wiped clean. At last David dares to reveal his love, and she finds him both fascinating and desirable. But what will happen when her memory returns and she realizes she has fallen for a man she has sworn never to trust?

Book Review: 4/5

“Sometimes people fall in love with those who do not return the same strength of feelings. It is as it is,” he said with a quiet intensity. “What I give, I give freely. You owe me nothing, not love, not friendship, not even obligation.”

Sherry Thomas is one of my favorite romance author and this is the story I've been dying to read since I started the series - and my expectations were met. Ms. Thomas made an amazing love story of a man who can't say the right words to the woman he wanted for a long time, and a woman who is deeply in love with another and is willing to risk everything.

I don't know whether I'd fall in love with David or not. He can be annoying at times and lovable the next. His tactics are so high school - trying to get the attention of the girl he likes through teasing and not-so-amusing bantering. I wish he can just be honest with Helena and tell her what he really feels for her. On the other hand, he is an amazing father to his illegitimate daughter. He's very patient, kind and just. He didn't want to shun his daughter away like any noble man would do to children who were born outside the blanket. Instead, he took her in his roof, and be the best father that a special child needs.

Helena - the perfect epitome of the woman who is blinded by love. She was in love with Andrew for a long time, and when an opportunity knocked, she took it - without looking at the consequences of her actions. Good thing David was there to save her reputation.

The clean slot David wanted came when Helena lost her memory, and despite that - he tried to come clean. But what happens when Helena regains her memory and remember that she loved another?

Despite the familiar plot that I'm not really fond of (amnesia), I fell in love with this book and its characters and would gladly recommend it to friends. Especially for those people who look too far for love, not noticing what is in front of them.

Favorite Quotes:
  • I beg you to exercise wisdom and restraint and remember that not all opportunities are created equal. Some are nothing but steps leading down toward catastrophe.”
  • “Perhaps you forgave him too much, but who among us would not wish to be so generously loved and generously forgiven?”
  • “I’ve always loved you,” he said, his eyes a blue that was almost violet. “You know this.” She swallowed a lump in her throat. “I only wonder whether I deserve such devotion.”
“Sometimes people fall in love with those who do not return the same strength of feelings. It is as it is,” he said with a quiet intensity. “What I give, I give freely. You owe me nothing, not love, not friendship, not even obligation.”

Book Review: Perfection (A Neighbor from Hell Book #2)

by RL Mathewson

Book Description:

Zoe is used to taking care of herself and has long ago accepted that if anything bad was going to happen, it was going to happen to her. So when she loses her job over something most bosses would probably be happy with and her life starts going down hill from there she doesn't expect it to get any better. She certainly didn't expect any help from the loud jerk next door, but then again she has nothing to lose so puts her trust in him and hopes for the best. What she didn't expect was the once in a lifetime opportunity that he offers her through an arrangement where they both benefit and no one is supposed to get hurt, but she should have known better because her luck has never been that good.

Like most Bradfords, Trevor has a soft spot for food, but that's about all. He leads a pretty straightforward life and likes to keep things simple and that includes his relationships. He wants the perfect woman and knows exactly what she'll be like. So when he discovers much to his horror that he's thinking about his frumpy little neighbor he decides the best way to get his head straight is by working her out of his system. He'll keep her around, but only until he finds perfection.

Book Review: 4/5
Just like the first one - I completely love the second book of A Neighbor from Hell.

Just like the any other Bradfords, Trevor is...

Yep -he's always hungry. And indeed, the malady runs in the family. Their 'weakness' for food is a bit scary - but nevertheless adorable. How can they eat so much and not be overweight? Life is so not fair. He's looking for a perfect wife: the one who can cook, comes from a big family, has the body, at least well-off and a whole lot more.

Then here comes Zoe who is the complete opposite of what he wants: she could not cook for the life of her, except that she makes a nice sandwich, she doesn't have any family, no job and doesn't have the body that most men drool for. She decided to go on a diet - and I so admire her self-preservation and discipline to lose weight.

To summarize:

It's hot.
It's sweet.
It's funny.
It's perfect

Book Review: Playing For Keeps (A Neighbor from Hell, #1)

by R.L. Mathewson

Book Description:
Done with being the world's biggest pushover, Haley decides that things are going to change starting with the aggravating neighbor who has too much charm and not enough restraint. What she didn't expect was to sucked into his world, but Haley has a game plan and she won't let herself forget just what the bad boy next door is capable of. The last thing Jason expected was for his little shy neighbor to go Rambo on him over some ruined flowers. After he decides to take her under his wing he can't help but that notice that she fits very nicely in his life. Now the only left is to convince her that this is anything but a game.

Book Review: 5/5

Yay.

This is one of the books that had be swooning and grinning the whole time. You can't help but just finish it up to the last page or else, you'll be missing something.

I like the plot - having two neighbors who started on the wrong foot found friends within each other. Who knew when all those years she hated his guts? All of a sudden: they couldn't live comfortably without each other. The thing I love most about the story line is that: despite being attracted to one another, they stayed friends for a while , until things were sizzling between them and they could no longer deny their feelings for each other.

Haley is an great girl who didn't deserve a family like hers. It was nice to see her character change in the duration of the story - on how she finally stood up and fought her ground.

JASOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNN! If you ask me what describe him best, I would say:

I know it's almost (well, it is!) a disorder to be that obsessed with food, and a sin for not gaining weight for it - nevertheless, I find his love for food adorable. He's a 30 year-old growing kid. I'd be living in poverty if I'll end up with him. He can't seem to stop eating.

some_text

YET. He's a prince charming.

He's a bad-boy turned good when he finally found someone special. I love his patience - for a guy who have been with several willing ladies: he's patience is really something to commend. Although, like his prediction, he f*cked things up eventually, but at least he tried his best to win her back. :)

The epilogue was just the right thing to end this wonderful story. I'm looking forward in reading more books from this author, and I am excited to read the next novel from this series.
