Blog Tour/Book Review: Code Red by Amy Noelle

Title: Code Red
Author: Amy Noelle
Publication Date: April 11, 2013, Writer's Coffee Shop
Rating:

Book Description:
After getting hurt in college by a gorgeous man, Nicole Magette vowed never to risk losing her heart again. Now she lives a structured and satisfying life. Her work is easy, her friends are her family, and the only consistent men in her life are her two cats, Winchester and Huntington Peabody the Third. She doesn't date, and she hooks up only with losers—men she has absolutely no risk of falling for. But if she finds herself in danger, she has her old fail-safe in place—the Code Red.

In college, she and her four best friends came up with the system as a way to keep away the good-looking bastards that might worm their way past their carefully constructed walls. Seven years later, three of her friends have succumbed to their last Code Reds and are happily married. Now it’s just Nicole and her closest friend, Jen, who are still on their own, and Nic is just fine with that.

That is, until Joshua Daniels is transferred to Nicole’s office from New York and assigned to work with her on a special project. He's everything she's avoided and everything she claims she doesn't want, so why can’t she get him out of her mind? He's persistent, dangerously handsome, and sexy as sin. In other words, he’s her worst nightmare. She turns to her friends to help her resist Josh’s considerable charms and the inescapable draw she feels every time she gets near him. Can the Code Red save her this time, or will Josh send her perfectly balanced life into chaos

Code Red.
It’s a support system. Any time one of us encounters a guy who’s dangerous, one who could tempt us and make us forget what jerks they are, we call in the others for reinforcement, who will come running and make sure we don’t give in to temptation.

Nicole Margaret swore off men after she found out her ex getting out from another room - obviously they didn't do any group study. From then on, she refused to date gorgeous guys or anyone who can capture his heart. She lost her boyfriend, but gained new-found friends. Together with them - they invented Code Red - a cry for help in case one of them is about to fall in love with Mr. Wrong.

But years later, with her friends marrying off their last Code Reds, Nicole and Jen found themselves single. Nicole is satisfied with that, after all, she has the incredible BOB who can satisfy her. She even listed reasons why BOB is better than a real boyfriend: (plus she has her two male felines)
Reasons why BOB is better than a real boyfriend:
1. He hits the right spot, accurately, each and every time.
2. He is always ready to go. If his battery is low, a quick change can equal hours of fun.   A real boyfriend requires rest and recuperation.
3. He doesn’t expect me to cuddle or talk to him after he’s fulfilled his purpose.
4. When I’m not in the mood, he sits quietly in the drawer and doesn’t bother me.
5. When I am in the mood, he’s right there ready to fulfill my needs instead of out with the guys or doing shit for his mother or something.
6. He’s not too small, not too big, and if he was, I wouldn’t have to pretend he wasn’t to spare his feelings. I’d just replace him with a more fitting model and there’d be no fuss about it.
7. He doesn’t have to lie to get me into bed.
8. He doesn’t care if I look like shit. He performs regardless.
9. He doesn’t say he loves me and...

Everything in her life was smooth sailing until Joshua Daniels strutted into their office from New York. After that, her world, heart and head is in chaos.

Because Josh is the epitome of her Code Red. He's gorgeous, brilliant, has a sense of humor, and nice. Can Code Red save her heart from falling for this guy and making another mistake? (If I had a Code Red, one look at this guy and I'm sure I'll take a plunge)

Nic, on the other hand, is the ultimate queen of denial, and just like the rest of her friends, I want to join them in strangling her for panicking, for not allowing herself to date Josh and for being annoying.

Her walls were so thick and so tall that no one could penetrate it. But Josh is not a douche. He had shown her how nice he can be and how he was willing to work things out. Will she be able to finally take a chance or would it be too late for her?

Her friends were just amazing. Knowing that she met half of the group after the Damian-fiasco back in college. After the incident they had been inseparable and were always there for each other especially when it comes to the matters of the heart.

Code Red in the hospital constitutes and emergency that needs to be addressed as soon as possible, and after reading this story, I immediately raised a Code Red to my friends who loved contemporary romance.

I definitely enjoyed reading it and would look forward to other books that Ms. Amy Noelle will have in the future. There were a lot of funny moments and exasperating ones. Code Red is about taking a risk on love, give it a try before it walks away. Code Red is about friendship, the importance of a support system not just in relationship but to everyone.

I love Amy Noelle and her characters. I would gladly recommend this to girls out there who had been hurt and has difficulty trusting in love.

“I’m just saying, you could never be with a guy who didn’t fight with you, who didn’t challenge you, and who didn’t try to fight through those walls you have up. That’s why you haven’t dated anybody at all. The guys you hook up with would let you walk all over them, and you’d never respect them at all.”
“It’s easy to forget all of the bad memories once you’ve found Mr. Right.” Her eyes got that look, and her smile faltered. I cringed. She was thinking of him again. “Then, when you lose him, you still remember the good. And you look for it everywhere, but you can’t find it.”
“What do you think you’ve been doing to me, every day at work? Even before we were together, you teased me relentlessly. And then when we were together, when I knew exactly what I was missing each and every night when I went home to an empty bed, it was even worse.”
“He doesn’t say he loves you at all. He doesn’t touch your skin or look into your eyes, and tell you you’re the only girl in the world for him. That he’s been scared to say it because he didn’t want to lose you. He doesn’t tell you he ached for you every minute he was away.”

Series: Lengths #2

Review:

Do you believe in love at first phone call?

Cohen Rodriquez, Deo’s hilarious, über responsible best friend in LENGTHS got dumped by his longtime girl because he’s ‘not impulsive enough,’ and he's burned up.

But maybe, just maybe, she’s more right than he wants to admit. So he starts to date.
A lot.
But no one really feels like the one. And the more girls he dates, the more Cohen’s convinced she isn’t really out there.

Luckily he has Maren—the girl with the sexy voice who always cracks the best jokes. They’ve been talking daily for a year…on the phone. What started as all work soon blooms into friendship. Then she asks him.

Do you want to meet?

He's scared out of his mind to ruin the one easy, fun relationship he has going for him. But he takes the plunge, and things are just fine, totally easy and comfortable.

Except that they both sense it's not strictly platonic...there is an undeniable attraction and absolute raw chemistry between them…and every time they're in the same room, that attraction gets deeper and harder to ignore.

Maren could be the best thing that’s ever happened to Cohen… Or she could send his carefully compartmentalized life into a tailspin.

Cohen has to decide if he’s ready to let go of his comfortable fantasy and embrace the one girl who might be able to change his luck in love.

Book Review: First Comes Love

Book Details
Author: Katie Kacvinsky
Format: Kindle

Summary
Like his name, Gray is dark and stormy. Dylan, a girl always searching for what’s next, seemingly unable to settle down, is the exact opposite: full of light and life. On the outside, they seem like an unlikely couple. But looks can be deceiving and besides, opposites attract.

What starts as friendship, turns into admiration, respect and caring, until finally these two lone souls find they are truly in love with each other.

But staying in love is not as easy as falling in love. If Dylan and Gray want their love to last, they’re going to have to work at it. And learn that sometimes love means having to say you’re sorry.

Review
Review Grade: 4/5
It's pretty weird how someone can change your life in a blink of an eye.
I thought...
1. Judging from the cover, I would have taken this for a vamp lit which I'm not really fond of. Anyway, lesson learned, do not judge the book by its cover nor its blurb.
2. The plot will center on bullying/abuse.
3. I will so not like the ending.
4. Someone will die.

BUT

Let me start by how much this novel surprised me. This was short, sweet and pretty much concise but I love it! I love the simplicity of the plot and how the author finally manage to close the novel without me feeling hanging or hoping for a whole lot more.

Location
Hot, steamy Phoenix desert during the summer. I couldn't believe they went on hiking under the scourging heat of the sun without dying of dehydration. Heat stroke is pretty deadly and usually what happens to people who challenges the sun. But nevertheless, the two of them lived to tell their tale :)

Boy Meets Girl
when two totally different people meet

Dylan, Dylan, Dylan - I was overwhelmed by her character. Seriously. I have never met someone more restless, optimistic and always on the go (such as her) in fictionworld. But I like her. I like her passion for photography, how she managed to change her life and allow herself to live each day as it comes, making simple goals daily and manage to stick to them. These goals lead her toGray. She was trying to make a friend and chose this person who seemed to be a loner.

I love her so much for being a friend to Gray and not pushing him totally to a cliff. She knew where to stop and what ponds not to dip her feet into. Her perseverance and determination to allow Gray to live his life and change for the better was admirable.

Gray Just like the name suggested - Gray is dark & stormy. He had his life on hold for his family when a tragedy struck. He no longer wants to feel, instead he prefers to remain numb. He was angry and in denial. Everything changed when he met Dylan. He was pushed to do crazy things he never imagined he could do.

Boy meets girl and so forth...
Just like magnet, opposite do attracts. The boy who wants to feel nothing fell in love with the girl who has all the zest in life. I love their time together because you can feel Gray's emotion shifts from heavy to light. He seems to be happier with her. Their first time was pretty adorable. It wasn't steamy and kinky, instead it was cute and and funny. I fell in love with the both of them.

But then reality hits, summer is almost ending and she'll be gone. Will this be another summer fling or can he stop her from leaving?

First comes this book...
This is my first Katie Kacvinsky book, and I must admit I like it. I would gladly recommend it to friends who just adore short and meaningful reads (like me!). Can't wait to get my hands on the rest of her books!

Book Review: Barely Breathing

Book Details
Author: Rebecca Donovan
File Size: 740 KB
Print Length: 420 pages

Summary:
Emma’s struggle with an abusive home life came to heart pounding conclusion in the final chapters of "Reason to Breathe". Now everyone in Weslyn knows Emma’s secret, but Carol can’t hurt Emma anymore. Some are still haunted by the horror of that night, and some must face the repercussions of their choices. Fans of Rebecca Donovan’s debut novel will discover there’s still much to learn about Emma’s life.

Review:
Rating: 4/5

If the first book had me breathless at the end of the novel: The whole book is a torture. It had me on a roller coaster ride.

Emma is almost still the same, she would prefer to keep everything to herself, denying to have problems and loves to make herself an emotional punching bag of people she loved (or more likely wouldn't like to hurt). She has a real friend (Sara)

Evan - he's a wonderful boyfriend. A kind of boy you would want to take home to mommy. He's understanding, sweet, a knight in shining armor and he would do everything for Emma. She probably doesn't deserve him for the things she did - but it doesn't matter, Emma deserves her happy ending for everything she have been through. I just wished she knew what she's throwing away.

There's Sara who's always been her friend, and is always there for her. She was a bit bitchy in one part of this novel, nevertheless - she too had her happy ending.

Rachel - I couldn't imagine what kind of mother would do something like that to a child. She was unstable and has problems dealing with her issues and grief. The surprise visitor in the middle of the book will give readers an inkling on what she really is and what she has been through. What happened the day Emma was left with George and suffer for five years.

Plus, Donovan also had her readers FINALLY know what happened that night at the end of book 1. How Emma survived the ordeal and how Evan came into the rescue.

There's Jonathan. At first I couldn't place him - does he belong to the villains or to the heroes? But in the end, one single scene finally made up my mind and I have placed him in the group which he clearly belongs.

Barely Breathing tells readers about the aftermath of surviving abuse. It shows that it just doesn't end when the abuser is locked up behind bars. There are aftermaths to consider and to be carefully take into consideration. It also tells its readers that it is okay to ask for help if you need it - to be careful whom to trust, to see and decipher who are your real friends and the people you need to be careful with. Pain often makes people blind and push people away. It may make them feel they're saving the people they love from the pain they feel - but they just shove them away. Breaking relationships rather than making them stronger.

The ending was a major cliff-hanger. For people who are lovers of happily-ever-after, then you just have to wait for the last book to be published. Rebecca Donovan is the single author who made my stomach quench while reading a book. It was uncomfortable, but I didn't stop until I finished it. I wanted to know what will happened next, by the time I was on the last page, I groaned in frustration. (The cliffhanger is that baaad!!!)

I wish Emma would change in the next book and realize she's blessed compared to other people who have experienced the same thing she did. I would expect a happy ending for everyone.

Book Review: Geek Girl

Book Summary

Jen's life of rebelling and sneaking out has grown stale. On a whim, Jen makes a bet to turn Trevor, a nice little geek, into a "bad boy." Hanging out with the geeks, however, pulls Jen into a world she never dreamed existed. But when Trevor finds out about the bet, all bets are off.

Book Review

Rating: 5/5

Ever since I have read Cindy Bennett’s Heart on a Chain – I have been looking forward for some of her works. Then came Geek Girl – okay, the title may have given me the wrong impression of what the plot is all about. But nevertheless, picking this book up made my day. And just like the first book I have read under this author, Geek Girl didn’t disappoint me.

I adore the characters! Jen – she’s not the geek, rather she’s a Goth. Because of her past, she became a cynic and a pessimist. She has been through a lot of things, and for her to have survived it is a miracle. I sympathize with her character all throughout the book, although there are times that I was wanted to give her a bad shake and come out clean with the bet she made with her friends.

In the beginning, her set of friends were those Goth-dressed people who loves to party. I don’t really think they really care about Jen, although I think it is also Jen’s fault since she didn’t want anyone to be close to her. I appreciate Jane, she came late in the story, but she was worth the wait. Jen was also wary about her, but Jane shove her way into Jen’s life. She was there when Jen really needed someone to be there for her.

I like her foster family, her foster mother who really cares a lot for her and trusts her implicitly. Sue never pushed herself to Jen and forced her with whatever she think is right. I think she respects her individuality and let her figure everything on her own, just staying on the sideline getting ready whenever Jen needs her. Tamara annoyed me at first, but she turned out to be wonderful in the near end.

Trevor – wow! He was definitely swoon-worthy. I am a sucker for geeks. They’re my type and I fell easily for this guy. Who wouldn’t? He’s a straight A-student, a student body officer, a real gentleman, really patient, and he has dimples! His shirt is all buttoned-up – but of course, that can be remedied easily. I love his friends, they were all geeky but nevertheless charming. My favorite was Brian. He was really kind to Jen. Trevor’s family reminded Jen of the Cleaver’s. I adored Todd (Trevor’s brother) who was a charmer. I also love the trampoline and everything that has something to do with it.

I like the plot because it did not just focus on boy-girl relationship but several other aspects like family (normal and dysfunctional), foster care, abuse, abandonment, early pregnancy, adoption,  special child/ren and their needs, a little booze and drugs among youth. So even though you are way beyond 18, you can relate to this book.

Geek Girl is funny and sweet. It may not have some steamy scenes from the usual YA novel but the intimacy between Jen and Trevor is adorable, and you just couldn’t help but sigh and smile when these scenes pop every now and then. But also it has a heartbreaking side that could make you teary-eyed and you can feel your heart ache. It is definitely worth the read. I have spent less than a day in reading the whole book, and it left me wanting more! Cindy Bennett turned an ordinary-plot into an extraordinary story that will leave her readers entertained and in love.

I am so looking forward for the next Cindy Bennett novel!

Book Review: Catching Jordan

Book Details

Author: Miranda Kenneally
Format: Kindle Edition
File Size: 1460 KB
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire (December 1, 2011)

Book Summary

What girl doesn't want to be surrounded by gorgeous jocks day in and day out? Jordan Woods isn't just surrounded by hot guys, though - she leads them as the captain and quarterback on her high school football team. They all see her as one of the guys, and that's just fine. As long as she gets her athletic scholarship to a powerhouse university. But now there's a new guy in town who threatens her starring position on the team... and has her suddenly wishing to be seen as more than just a teammate.

Book Review

Rating: 5/5

I don’t like football, I don’t even considering learning anything about it, but it didn’t stop me from loving Catching Jordan and all the silly football jokes this book has.

I like Jordan – she’s one heck of a girl. At the beginning of the book, I wasn’t sure if she was a girl or a boy because the narrator is really, really tough. Imagine a female quarterback of a high school football team which is dominated by hard-ass alpha males. She is the type of girl you can really say that she is one of the boys. It is just too bad that she needed to kiss a frog before she found out that the prince she was waiting for is right beside her all this time. I love her passion for football and how she cares about her friends, most especially Henry. To gain and keep the respect of her team mates – she doesn’t cry, or hooked up with her teammates. But everything turns topsy-turvy when Ty glides into her field. He’s every girl’s dream and she was surprised when Ty liked her too. Now the big dilemma comes: will she lose the respect of the football team, be the topic of the locker rooms if she gives in to her girly fantasies?

Henry – he’s swoon-worthy! He’s really a great friend to Jordan and I love their relationship because he is every dependable and is always ready to catch her. What more could a girl ask for? Well, only that he can be a bit stubborn and afraid to take risks. It is frustrating!

I like Jordan’s family. Her mom is pretty cool – allowing Henry to still sleep over with certain conditions and being always present during her games supporting her all the way. Mike, her brother is also pretty amazing. He plays for a college team but still comes to her game when he has the time. The only problem is her father – the great NFL player Donovan Woods who seemed to support everyone but her. But I understand where this is coming from – fatherly concern. I love how he redeemed himself in the near-end of the story. The scene was very touching and Miranda Kenneally did a fantastic job – it was heartwarming and my favorite scene in the whole book.

Okay, sex. It wasn’t discussed or elaborated. It was just basically slumped into the story just to add – probably spice? I would love to romanticize about it. Especially between two people who seemed to be in love with each other. But it doesn’t matter that much because you’ll overcome the frustration as you continue on reading. This book is an epic and Simone Elkeles is right to say this is a must-read book!

Catching Jordan is not just about the ultimate girl power. It is about being okay to show vulnerability and emotions without losing yourself. You can be friends with people you never expected, that you can find love that you always wanted is sometimes staring you right in the face, and sometimes the thing that you wanted most may not be the best for you.

Book Review: Going Too Far

Book Details

Author: Jennifer Echols
Format: Kindle Edition
File Size: 368 KB
Publisher: MTV Books; Original edition (March 17, 2009)

Book Summary

HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO?
All Meg has ever wanted is to get away. Away from high school. Away from her backwater town. Away from her parents who seem determined to keep her imprisoned in their dead-end lives. But one crazy evening involving a dare and forbidden railroad tracks, she goes way too far...and almost doesn't make it back.

John made a choice to stay. To enforce the rules. To serve and protect. He has nothing but contempt for what he sees as childish rebellion, and he wants to teach Meg a lesson she won't soon forget. But Meg pushes him to the limit by questioning everything he learned at the police academy. And when he pushes back, demanding to know why she won't be tied down, they will drive each other to the edge -- and over....

Book Review

Rating: 5/5

Going Too Far is my second Jennifer Echols book, and unlike Love Story – I fell in love with this one. It had me anticipating for what is about to happened on Thursday 6:01am!

The characters are the heart of this book. Jennifer Echols introduced us to two amazing people: Meg and John. Meg started out strong and different. She has blue hair! Her character is filled with anger, and hurt. All she wanted to do was to live her life everyday like it were her last and get out of town as soon as she have her high school diploma on her hands.  As the story progresses, you get to know the real Meg, what the hard façade is all about, her fears and issues. You can’t help yourself but love her in the end.

John, on the other hand, Meg thinks he’s 40 or something – and I thought so as well. But he’s more than what meets the eye – he’s intelligent, a gentleman, fun, and sensitive with or without his police uniform on. His reasons for staying behind despite the fact that he could really go to universities, are pointed and questioned by Meg in half of the novel.

Going Too Far is not your ordinary love story. It isn’t the usual face-phased, although the whole book is only a one-week span – readers can see and feel a carefully laid out story of falling in love. It was not the love at first sight thing, but a gradual process that you would actually feel the chemistry and the intensity of their emotions for each other.

I love the fact that Echols left no stone unturned. Every single thing that happened to every character or event in this book has meaning and important in some way and it was fully explained. Going Too Far is short, sweet read and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Book Review

Rating: 3/5

After reading a glimpse of Sophie and Eric’s blooming love story in Forever Mine, I know I needed to get my hands on Sweet Sophie. If the Moreno Brothers are the ultimate alpha male, Sof is the female version. She’s very passionate, hot-headed and determined – even her brothers couldn’t stop her. Good thing she has Eric. I think Eric is more level headed of the two of them – but he’s still somewhat putty is Sof’s hand. Eric had me laughing for most parts primarily because he was really scared to get his ball crushed by Sof’s brothers.

I like Sof because she sees good in other people and she’s not afraid of accepting that she made a mistake – humbling qualities, but both brought her trouble in her relationship with Eric.

I was wondering all along what kind of ‘trials’ would these two have, I have this idea that their relationship was perfect, after all, Sof was saving herself for him, and Eric would never let Sof cry. That is why I was a little disappointed with the plot, after reading Alex and Val’s story, I was hoping it would surpass the drama and action there. I wish the author could’ve chosen a more mature or deeper drama than that. But Sweet Sophie was still a nice read, it stresses the importance of fidelity and safe sex. Something a lot of us needs to be reminded of.
