Playing center field for the New York Kings, Jake Woodbury has one of the most prestigious jobs in all of sports. To the world, he's the good-looking, soft-spoken minister's son who’s survived celebrity without a hint of scandal. But, inside, he's reeling from a secret that seems destined to haunt him forever.
Scarlett Moore is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, famous for singing about her celebrity ex-boyfriends. The CEO of her record label has carefully honed her provocative image since she was fifteen. Sex sells, and Scarlett’s well aware that it takes more than talent to stay on top.
One thing is clear: She’s the last thing Jake needs. And he’s the do-gooder jock she should avoid at all costs. But when the game begins, all bets are off.

This
was one of those book that you just have to keep reading, starting from the
beginning, the moment Scarlett Moore sung the national anthem, that had the
hairs on my arms stood – I think I could hear her sing by just reading the
words. Let’s not forget the gala. It was really epic. Out of character for our
dear Jake, but believeable. (this was one of my early favorite scene in the
book #squirmmoments).
Who
wouldn’t love Jake? He’s a Christian (and stood by his faith, without
preaching), he doesn’t drink alcohol, he’s respectful to women, and he’s
compassionate. But at the same time – he’s great in bed, sexy and never boring.
He just had some secrets and walls surrounding it. It took him a while to
finally open up and spill his secret. My heart just broke for him.
But
at some point, I also think that his conscience is working too much. I
understood that he’s a Christian, but he was punishing himself too much. There
are times I think he was emotional and overly sensitive. On the other hand, who
could blame him? No one could ever feel the pain he suffered if you haven’t been
in his shoes.
As
for our Scarlett- the way Collette described her – she reminded me too much of
Taylor Swift because of her songs. She has her moments as well. I like her most
of the time, especially when she tries to break Jake’s wall. It was an
incredible feat, some would give up, but not her. She didn’t live a perfect
life and did things she wasn’t proud of, but she was trying to change her life,
and it made me love her more. I was able to relate to her. She had a hard time
deciding and weighing her options, but then again, the goodness in her heart
and the love she had for Jake had prevailed over some others.
They
started with lust, the attraction was instant, but I like the fact that love
grew between the two of them. It didn't felt like it was forced. I just wished
that Jake would "man up" a little.
Rebecca,
she was something else. I hated her, and then I hated her less (but still hated
her). How can she move on when Jake stayed in the same depressing place? Nevertheless,
what I didn't see coming was the gift coming from Rebecca and what it contains.
I thought all the while she was going to break the two of them apart. I wasn't
expecting something sweet and generous coming from her. I thought it would
drive them apart, because Scarlett was already furious. But it made their bond stronger. So, thanks
Rebecca.
I
was one of the lucky readers who get to beta-read this book! Collette West
might have a thing for long stories, and at first I thought this was another
long read. But among all of her New York Kings Series, this one was my fastest
read. I think it was because of the interesting mix of characters Collette has
in this book, or perhaps the twists and turns of events that would keep you on
your seats. Nevertheless, this was another great read from an awesome author. If
you love sports romance, with some sprinkle of steam and twist – you have to
read this one!
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.
Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.
She is the author of NIGHT GAMES and GAME CHANGER.
