Book Review

Forever is the thrilling conclusion in the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. Like the first two books (Shiver & Linger), it is filled with intense emotion and a heart-racing suspense in the near-end of the book. The story revolves in the few months after Grace shifted into a wolf, Cole trying to kill himself in discovering how the ‘cure’, and Sam constantly waiting and running for Grace. He grabs some unwanted attention because of Grace’s disappearance and a recent murder investigation. Isabel’s father is firm in his conviction of driving the wolves out of Mercy Falls whatever the cost is.

I love the character growth in Forever. The relationship and the friendship that has been formed grew stronger and deeper. Even Cole and Isabel’s relationship begins to move in an easy pace to the right direction. The two of them are my favorite characters in the book. In my opinion, they outshine Grace and Sam. Cole and Isabel’s comic relief is a complement to a more serious tone of the main characters. I look forward for their names in every chapter.

I am ambivalent with the ending of Forever. It was open-ended. There were so many questions I still have in mind, like if Cole found the ‘cure’ that he was looking for. Although there was a little ray of hope in there, but I would really like a happy and concrete ending. Nevertheless, READ THIS BOOK (the whole trilogy)! I assure you that it is way better than Twilight.

Book Review

If Shiver wowed me, Linger took my breath away. It is a beautiful, breathtaking and an intense sequel. It possesses the same type of plot as the first book but there is a new sense of thrill because of rising tension and secrets that are kept. Stiefvater introduces new characters in the story, Cole and included him and Isabel as narrators. This allows readers to have an in-depth look not only on the love-story of Sam and Grace but most especially about the wolves and their way of living.

I like the growth of the narrating characters in the story. Sam is now quite stable in his human form and is getting used to it. He is in constant battle in dealing with the fact  that Beck may never come back and he is the one in charge. Not to mention, he has problems dealing with the new wolf, Cole. Cole is dark, damaged and chose to be a wolf to escape his life. If Sam wants to be human permanently, Cole wanted the opposite. I like Cole and Isabel’s constant bantering, it gives lightness and humor in this book. Grace, on the other hand, deals with family and health issues, as her parents decided (at last) to take their roles. Lastly, Isabel deals with her guilt of her brother’s death. She tried to stay away from the wolves, but found herself drawn to Cole.

And of course, I still hate the absentee parents. Grace parents are more concerned of their daughter sleeping with Sam than the fact that she is sick. Can’t they even differentiate a healthy kid from not healthy? Isabel’s parents, Cole’s genius’ parents and including Sam’s adoptive father Beck. Can’t these kids, for once, have adults to turn to rather than themselves? It’s too many crappy parents for one single book.

Yes, the binding still sucks.

I’ll end this review saying that Linger is a very emotional, intense and heartbreaking story I read. The words are masterfully crafted and the plot was well thought of. It will keep you at the edge of your seat, preventing your arms to have the book placed down, and once you’re through – you will crave for the last book Forever.

Book Review

Shiver is my first Maggie Stiefvater book. This is the story of a wolf named Sam and a girl named Grace. As a child, Sam saved Grace from being devoured by other wolves and since then, they both made a connection.

What I love about this book...

• The story is from two alternating point of views (POV): Sam and Grace. I had difficulty with first-person novels because you can only know and feel the narrator’s thoughts and emotions. With this book, you can have the POV of both the lead characters. There is a flawless transition between the two narrations, both have distinctive voices and characteristic and the reader would easily know who’s turn it is to talk.
• She didn’t try to sugarcoat wolf stories with silver bullets and full moon. Instead, she approached it with a different kind of myth slash science fiction – which I find unique. Sam and the rest of his pack “shift” into wolves with the change in temperature. I love the fact that the temperature was place in each chapter of the book. It was a nice touch.
•  The words: poetry and its elaborate description, I have never read a book that gave me a vivid view of a certain place. My favorite part was her describing the scent inside the candy shop which made me drool (ALMOST!)
•  The romance, it wasn’t cheesy, it was subtle and it was sweet. I like the way that they can somehow finish each other’s sentences and they don’t need words to convey how they feel. I also like the fact that they both share a room, but all they do is sleep. Pretty wholesome...
•  Characters: I love Grace’s strength, Beck’s father-like figure to Sam, Ulrick’s being a literature teacher and Sam’s determination to stay with Grace. Last but not the least my favorite character, Isabella – I love her sarcasm, humor and wit, she made me laugh in this tension-filled book.

I hate it because...

• Oh com’on! Absentee parents? Grace may be the strongest person I know, but even strong people need guidance and support of their parents. She was left in the car and was almost roasted – the father wasn’t even questioned by social services. I wonder why in the world her parents are that way? They behave that Grace is their roommate rather than their child.
• The binding of the book! I never had a more lousy binding trade paperback than this series!!!! I never had spine creases on my new books – but with this, I couldn’t helped it even if I was careful not to… (doesn’t have anything to do with the story, I know!!!). I wished I could’ve bought the hard bound copies instead.

To end, I would recommend Shiver to my friends. It is much nicer than Twilight. I couldn’t put it down, good thing I have the second book. I couldn’t wait to know what is going to happen to the characters in the next book Linger.

Book Review

After reading the first book Hush, Hush, I just know I need to get my hands on this one. I find Crescendo better than the first one. The flashbacks were nicer and as well as the dialogues. There was more information of the Nephilim, the real incident behind her father’s death, Nora’s surprising past and a new light on some of the characters.

I still love the characters. I am still head-over-hills in love with Patch. He is still hot, and he did everything to protect Nora. Nora, on the other hand, I find her more realistic in this novel. You may hate her because she turned into this immature and pretty irrational girl, she tends to speak or do things and then regret it later. But hey, teen-agers tend to act that way.

You will meet another hot guy here, Scott, Nora’s childhood friend who moved back to town during the time that Patch and her had problems. He was cute enough to make Patch jealous. You’ll never know whether he’s a good or bad guy. Then you get to know Marcie a whole lot better in this book, although she didn’t stopped being the ‘bully’ – but it was just nice to know her more as well as some of the reasons of her actions. Rixon was a revelation. He had played more part here compared to the first book because he got to hooked up with Nora’s best girlfriend, Vee. Now Vee, is still the same. I like her witty dialogues and she’s a still the light in this sort-of-dark novel.

The romance is amazing, the suspense is a killer and you will just turn one page to the next until you reached a cruel cliffhanger. Exactly, the ending is the real nightmare for those who love series. Good thing I got a copy of Silence (the third book). To end, Crescendo is still about the enthralling and emotional love story between the ordinary girl Nora and a fallen angel Patch.
