He was an ass, career was his priority rather than Maddy. But Maddy was his life and he loved her since they were kids. So when she finally left him, he didn't really know what to do. He came back to his family. But then, his family was almost non existent: his mother is helpless until she died, his dad beats them up and his sisters - they just gave up on life and lost their ways.
PRESENT Billy
He's bitter, alone, lost and rather than spending time playing hockey on ice, he spends it on the penalty box. One crazy fight after the game finally got to his bosses nerves - his coach and his agent finally decided he needed change. So when the make-over stint on the morning show came, they all grab it wholeheartedly. The Old Billy would not agree to this, but the new Billy - the one who wanted Maddy back gave in. He did the make-over stint not because he wanted to publicly humiliate himself but to be close to his Maddy. He would do anything to get her back.

Maddy is unpredictable, doormat wife. She drinks beer, nags and not afraid to speak her mind. She married him straight out of high school and early into the draft. How could she not, when she was in love with him since she was young? She loved him so much that her whole world revolved around him. She put off all her dreams, including studying journalism, until she could no longer recognize herself.
PRESENT Maddy
She's controlled, cold, successful, predictable. She no longer goes with the name Maddy, instead she prefers to be called Madeline. She didn't want to associate herself with Billy anymore. Once she signed the divorce papers, she tried to forget everything about her fast, and she even changed her name.
Truth to be told, the present Maddy annoyed me through the whole book. I agree that people should forgive but never forget. But Maddy's attitude towards Billy was just irritating (and considering Billy was supposedly to be the nuisance in the story!).

They were children, young when they got married. Immature. They both came from a poor family and Billy was just starting his career on the ice. Tempers, hormones, immaturity and marries doesnt really equate to forever. . Just like any other young marriages, theirs crumbled. The happily ever after they both envisioned ended with their signatures on the divorce paper.

But forgetting the past and moving on with the present is not as simple as it sounds. Especially when so many things had changed and everything else is complicated.
Billy was hopeful that the show would bring them back together. Until something happened during the show. He didn't expect Maddy to have the heart to do it. Seeing the surprise he was not prepared for - his hope, his life, his career crumbled in front of live TV.
Now Billy is hounded by the press, is about to lose his job, he's already lost Maddy and he has a lot on his hands - including two kids who sprout out of nowhere - how can he possibly handle it?
I didn't expect to like Crazy Thing Called Love , but I did. I even cried at some point. But no, it wasn't the heartbreaking-walking-away-speeches that made my heart broke. It was the lost thirteen year old Becky, who just wanted to belong and to be loved. And since Molly O'Keefe mentioned her so much in this book that she can almost have a quarter of it to herself - I do expect to hear her story!.
Crazy Thing Called Love is a story about two old lovers who found their way back into each other after several years. A lot changed: their looks, views in life, but one thing did not: their love for each other. True to the saying first love never dies, readers are taken on a ride with Billy and Maddy into coming back together: the rough ride, the unexpected surprises, all the twist and turns. Sometimes getting back together is not that simple - because love is not just enough.
Molly O'Keefe wrote an amazing story that will leave you glued to the pages, with some tears on your eyes. Second chances & make overs doesn't get any better than this.
