This book didn’t made me cry, in all fairness. This book filled me with so much hope that despite the profound sense of loss a person goes through, he or she can push the darkness and find the happy ending a person deserves.
Laya loss her husband. They just got married. Having a husband whose work is to do crazy, out-of-this-world stunt made her already a bit nervous. But she knew that he always practice and prepares himself to do the tricks. Until his last. And Laya saw how it happened.
Micah is an introvert. His life is boring. He might be an Ivy-League graduate, but he had no idea how he ended up in a firm where his supervisor steals his work and the latter’s wife harasses him. Nevertheless, he is easy to like. I think of him as sort of a nerd, who likes to keep it to himself. Thank goodness his twin is his total opposite. His life is quite mundane until Laya comes into his life.
But then Laya is not yet over her grief. She uses facebook and writes comments on her husband’s page as though he is still alive. Micah tries to make Laya see that she can still live by leaving her anonymous gifts and notes, trying to recreate the sense of adventure she once shared with Cameron.
What I like about this book is that Laya didn’t immediately get a quick fix on her grief, we went through the journey together. From her lowest points, to her craziness, to trying to fix herself before going into a relationship, to finally healing. It was an emotional rollercoaster, with loads of painful realizations, and hard truths - but the ride was worth it.
I liked Micah - okay it was creepy that he did some sleuthing on Laya and left all those stuffs for her - that’s borderline stalker-ish, nevertheless he’s a great guy. He’s nice, well too nice that he almost didn’t have a backbone, but he changed throughout the story. I love his relationship with his twin, the way he persuade Laya to do things that will get her out of the darkness.
I enjoyed reading The Last Post, it wasn’t the emotional, tear-my-heart apart kind of story I was expecting. I still liked it. I liked the fact that readers accompanied Laya in her journey with grief and towards her happy-ever-after. It’s a story of survival, of loss, hope, and love.
