All Beatriz “Bia” Fernandes wants is to prove herself—to her family and friends—though it’s hard to prove anything with an overbearing father and three famous polo-playing older brothers. After her acceptance into college results in a heated family argument, the Brazilian girl leaves everything behind to find her own American dream.

College life away from home is perfect until the people she believes to be her friends turn on her. With lies and rumors threatening to suffocate her, Bia turns to her only freedom. Riding.

But one thing gets in the way of her escape. Garrett Blackwell and his bad cowboy attitude. Working at the ranch is his obligation, bugging Bia is his newfound hobby. His thick skin and easy grin don’t hide what Bia already knows—this misunderstood and lonely cowboy fights his own demons. Brushing horses’ coats and mucking out stalls shouldn’t be this sexy, and it isn’t long before he becomes a part of her distraction.

However, escaping won’t solve her problems, and it’s up to Bia to break down the fences around her and prove her strength—not to her family and friends, but to herself … and for Garrett. Because standing on her own doesn’t have to mean standing alone.

** Companion novel of Breaking the Reins. Can be read out of order.**

Beatriz “Bia” Fernandes had stood behind the success of her brothers. She wanted to do something for herself. She wanted to achieve something on her own. But doing something on her own resulted in a big family misunderstanding and her going to college to finally follow her dreams.

She thought she could start fresh and college life would be a good beginning. Everything was going perfectly until her so-called friends turned on her. Lies and vile rumors were spread about her, and she does one thing that made her feel really good, riding. I love Bia! She’s a great character,  with feistiness and strength that have withstood the storm. A normal girl would have run away as fast as possible. But she didn’t, she stayed, faced her demons and fought it. It may have affected some, and it was taming her fire a little bit – but she stood tall, and for that alone, she had my respect.

Then there’s Garrett Blackwell in his cowboy boots. She thought she had left all those people in school in the campus, but even in her supposedly-relaxing time, he was there. He was working for the ranch that she found. But it didn’t stop her from being there, and instead of just riding, she took her time to help around. It had given her a sense of purpose, and I was happy for her when she found a place where she wasn’t judged and nobody was whispering behind her back. As for Garrett, he has his own past and demons to slay. Despite the easy grin and smiles, she could see right through him – because it was like looking through a mirror. She tried not to be affected by him, but he was too irresistible to ignore. And despite the warning signs and all those stop lights that were in front of her, she succumbs to temptation.

And I thought they were going to live happily ever after! Imagine my surprise when the bomb was suddenly dropped. OMG Garrett!!!!! You simply broke my heart right there! Just as when I thought he was different from the rest. Argh!

Breaking Fences gave me a whole set of characters to really love and loathe for. There were times when I wanted to help Bia smack all those girls who were doing rude stuffs to her, but I figure out she can handle it on her own. Her strength and steadfastness was really admirable. But even the strong ones get tired, and needed heroes.

I enjoyed reading this book. Bia’s journey is one long rough road, but she made it at the end of the road. Not exactly the destination I was thinking about, but I was still glad she arrived there. The way it all ended was almost realistic, indeed, if I were Bia, I would have done the same. Nevertheless, you will fall in love with this amazing girl and her story. It was worth the read. Love horses or not, I’m sure, you will be captivated!
